Submissions now open!

Breaking Cover is a play development series that provides Albertan Playwrights with valuable tools to test their newest work. We are currently soliciting finished but previously unproduced plays for our 6th annual new play reading series!

We provide a director, cast, mini rehearsal process, and light dramaturgical support to your manuscript. It culminates with a public reading in the beautiful Snell Auditorium at the Red Deer Public Library. The reading is followed by a moderated question-and-answer period with your audience, so that you leave with new insight into your play from the inside out.

Submissions will remain open until 11pm on June 15th, 2026.

To submit your play for consideration, please email your Manuscript to [email protected] and include a Topsheet or Covering Letter with the following information:
  • A brief playwright bio
  • A brief synopsis of your play and its themes
  • The play’s development/performance history
  • The play’s development/performance future, if applicable

Breaking Cover is open to all Alberta playwrights, but preference is given to artists outside the Edmonton or Calgary areas.

Successful Applicants will be contacted by July 1st, 2026.
