Breaking Ground Playwriting Intensive

Get your idea out of your head and onto paper: fast.

Jump in the deep end this November and set aside two weekends to put your craft first.

The Breaking Ground Playwriting Intensive takes you from a creative spark to a first draft through a mix of group workshops, solo feedback sessions, and  a public showcase of some of your freshly-written pages read aloud by talented actors.

Lastly, you'll walk out the door with a realistic action plan that will leave you with a finished manuscript by May of 2026... just in time for the Breaking Cover submission window.

Itinerary of Events

Saturday Nov 1: Considering Aesthetics
How to write stories directors want to produce
3:00pm - 5:00pm

Why should Playwrights care about set and costume, anyway!? Isn't that a director's job?
If you've never stared down a stack of plays, you may not know how impactful "Considering Aesthetics" can be!
Directors, Producers, and Creative Planners want plays that make their job easier... Something inspiring, with unique and compelling visual elements that makes their next season fun, marketable, and unforgettable.

Sunday Nov 2: Write Like It's Your Job
How to write a play in six months, no inspiration needed

3:00pm - 6:00pm

Do you have a literal laundry list of reasons why you haven't written your next great play? Are you tired of being told to "set a ten minute timer and write a little every day"? ... Sounds like it's time to start Writing Like It's Your Job.

Your job is a place you show up to, and you do NOT have to wait around for inspiration to hit: There's work to do!

Find out who your boss is, where to get your tasks, and how to clock in.
Tuesday Nov 4: One-on-One Dramaturgy sessions
evening, various timeslots

Sit down with a dramaturg for personalized feedback, lingering questions, or guidance on your next steps. Sessions are writer-led, offering exactly the support you need to bust any blocks between you and the showcase.

Friday Nov 7: Casting Call (optional)
5:00pm - 8:00pm
Peek behind the curtain as a director takes your showcase script and matches it with actors. Sit in on a first read-through to see how the creative team tackles your work.
Saturday Nov 8: Public Sharing
6:00pm
Hear your words performed aloud for the first time in a free community showcase. Share your design vision, see your work on its feet, and celebrate with fellow creatives.

Take the Pledge!

Playwrights will be encouraged to "Take the Pledge!" and use their Breaking Ground action plan & story map to write a full manuscript.

You and other program participants will remain connected as a "digital cohort", to track and celebrate your writing goals together.

There will also be the option to meet-up in person to chat, support, and even attend local plays together over the long, cold, Central Albertan winter!

You can choose your own goal, but we have two suggested timelines: 30 days and 6 months.
