Artistic Director

Job Overview
The Artistic Director is the senior leader responsible for the overall creative, artistic vision of the community theatre company. In this role, you will work closely with the Board of Directors and Executive Director to ensure the theatre’s mission is fulfilled, balancing artistic vision with fiscal responsibility. The Artistic Director will oversee areas such as Season Planning, Education & Outreach initiatives, and Branding, while working within the boundaries and budget created by the Executive Director and Board of Directors.



Key Responsibilities

​Leadership & Strategy:
  • Create an artistic identity for the company.
  • Plan an annual season of productions and showcases.
  • Collaborate with program operators to fill out the season with additional events such as workshops and new play readings. 
  • Collaborate with the executive leadership to support and balance artistic vision with financial and operational considerations.


Financial Management & Fundraising:
  • Work within the provided operational and production budgets.
  • Plan the creative identity of some fundraisers.
  • May occasionally cultivate and maintain relationships with corporate and private donors, sponsors, and patrons to secure ongoing financial support. This is normally managed by the executive director, but if the artistic director is leveraging a unique interpersonal bond, they may contribute.


Marketing & Community Engagement:
  • Craft a company identity through artistic choices that builds the theatre company’s profile within the community.
  • Act as the face of the organization, representing the theatre at events, public functions, and within the arts community. Engage with community at these activities and report to the Board on opportunities and challenges being encountered.
  • Maintain strong relationships with other local theatre groups to foster opportunities for collaboration and co-production.
  • Seek and foster new partnerships with organizations and individuals, focusing on equity deserving populations.


Qualifications:
  • Experience: Experience with community theatre and managing community programs and engagement are highly desirable.
  • Skills: Strong leadership, communication, creative and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to make artistic choices that resonate with the Red Deer community.
  • Knowledge: Ability to undertake complex projects, including theatre productions, financial management, and fundraising strategies.
  • Education: Training in Theatre Performance, Theatre Production, Literary Arts, Film & Television, or a related field is preferred.
  • Commitment: Passion for community engagement and the performing arts. Additionally, a strong commitment to fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and supportive environment for all participants is required.

  • Financially savvy and resourceful in managing the theatre’s limited resources.
  • Creative problem-solver with strong artistic perspectives and a vision for the future.

Job Types: Part-time, Casual
Pay: Up to $2,000.00 per year depending on agreed upon responsibilities
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Red Deer, AB T4N 4A3
