In Calendar Girls, John Clark, of Knapeley, Yorkshire says "The flowers of Yorkshire are like the women of Yorkshire. Every stage of their growth has it's own beauty." As far too many of us know, many of the most beautiful flowers in our lives, our families, and our society have succumbed to cancer, sometimes before, sometimes during and sometimes after, reaching full bloom. When Red Deer Players decided to produce Calendar Girls, we were fully aware of its' core subject, and were intent on working with the Canadian Cancer Society to raise money to fight this terrible disease. Tragically we were given an even more immediate reinforcement on this, when one of our own, Carole Forhan, discovered she had the dread disease, and passed very quickly. Since Carole's arrival in Canada from England, at the tender age of 14, she brought with her a love of theatre. This love was tended and quickly grew into a passion that accompanied her as she migrated across Canada, making a lasting impact in theatre communities wherever she and husband Barry landed. Her last stop was in Red Deer, and theatre practitioners and lovers in Central Alberta quickly came to realize and appreciate the immense contribution she made to theatre in our community. She was particularly caring of young performers, and loved when these young people moved on towards building a life in theatre. It was a very natural decision to dedicate this production of Calendar Girls to Carole - and then it was a small step to move into the idea of creating a Scholarship in Carole's name. And this is how we came to this evening of raising funds for the Canadian Cancer Society, and the Carole Forhan Theatrical Arts Scholarship! |
